T rotting around the globe with family and friends is always fun-packed and exciting, but traveling alone has its own charm. Not only is it a great way to unwind and get in touch with yourself and nature, but you can also experience things that are impossible to experience with a traveling companion. While people often shy away from solo travel because they fear it’ll be boring or lonely, it can be one of the most rewarding and rejuvenating experiences of your life.

Sometimes, the idea of solo travel can be daunting, especially for first-timers. The most important thing to crack, however, is the destination you choose. Some places are more suitable for solo travel and should therefore be easier to explore by yourself. To help you out, we’ve come up with a list of some of the best countries for solo travelers to start you off on your adventure plans.

Singapore

With the country’s efficient transportation systems and a plethora of solo-friendly activities, Singapore is easily one of the best countries for solo travelers. There are plenty of eye-catching popular tourist spots you must visit, from the Gardens By The Bay to the National Gallery, theme parks, museums, and more. The country has an incredible nightlife and street food culture- from delectable multi-ethnic fish curries to chicken rice, sambal, laksa, and kopi tarik, the hawkers have it all! Not only is Singapore an absolute treat for the eyes and tongue, but it’s also incredibly cheap and safe, putting it at the top of this list.

Thailand

Known for its nightlife and party scene, Thailand makes for an adventurous, fun-packed time. With a well-developed backpacking scene, hiking trails, relaxing islands, outdoor activities, and unique cuisine, Thailand is an ideal destination for solo travelers worldwide.

The country is generally super safe, with thousands looping around its beaches, rainforests, and trails in well-worn backpacker routes each year. If you head over to Thailand any time soon, make sure to visit the Chiang Mai, stop at the Kanchanaburi, take a ride in a tuk-tuk, and of course, sip on some delicious local beer and slurp on warm, spicy noodles. Thailand also has an incredible street food culture, with most stalls selling yummy local cuisine day and night at very low prices. Some must-try dishes in Thailand are authentic Pad Thai (fried noodles), Pad Phuk Tong (Stir-Fried Pumpkin), Laab (Spicy Salad), and Khao Soi (creamy coconut curry noodle soup).

Vietnam

One of the cheaper travel options on this list, Vietnam is an absolute dream to explore alone. There is a common backpacker scene, so you’re bound to find some company along the way. From beaches to quirky cafes, street food, and a jaw-dropping art and cultural scene, Vietnam has all you’d ask for from a travel destination.

There are also enough English-speaking natives in the country to help you if you get in a bind, though we’d always advise learning some basic Vietnamese so you can find your way around easily. And no Vietnam trip is complete without delicious Vietnamese cuisine, so make sure you get your hands on some Pho (Vietnamese noodle dish), fried spring rolls, grilled pork, Cao Lau (pork on thick noodles), egg coffee, and of course, some Bia Hoi (beer) to warm you up from the inside.

Japan

One of the safest countries in the world, Japan is a favorite among solo travelers. The country has an incredible transport system that’ll make it easy for you to travel from one place to another and many indoor dining places and restaurants especially catered to solo visitors. Before continuing your trip, you can always stop at an Izakaya for some regional delicacies or a drink, sashimi, and hot pot. And if you’re a ramen fan, the place is littered with ramen shops that’ll serve you steaming bowls of delectable dishes that you can’t get anywhere else in the world. Japan does have a lot of tradition and unwritten social rules, though, so make sure you take a small briefing on what is considered polite behavior before you decide to tour the country alone!

Traveling alone can come with a lot of self exploration, and can be a journey not just externally but internally too!
