For some it was the long distance that was the barrier, while for others, the breakup was conciliatory and they are still good friends to date. Following are the most devastating celebrity breakups of this year.

Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline

It was reported in November that the Outer Banks co-stars, Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline, had broken up. Their relationship lasted a year.  The source said Madelyn and Chase are no longer together and that they tried to work things out quietly but split up a few months ago.

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid

Zayn, Gigi, and Yolanda Hadid made news in October after it was claimed that Zayn struck Yolanda at the family's house outside of Philadelphia.

Although Yolanda and Gigi have yet to comment on the event, Zayn has clarified his position on the matter in a tweet. In his lengthy statement, he was reported to have said, “As everyone knows I am a private guy, and I very much want to provide a safe and quiet atmosphere for my daughter to grow up in.”

He talked about how he wants to provide a space for his daughter where intimate family concerns aren't exposed for all to probe and pick apart in public. He said for his daughter's sake he agreed not to make any claims originating from an argument he had with Yolanda. So the silence is in order to safeguard that space for Khai, Zayn's daughter.

Kanye West and Irina Shayk

Irina Shayk and Kanye West have decided to officially announce their breakup exactly a month after it was initially rumoured that their unexpected romance was over.

Several magazines released their articles over the following weekend confirming the separation, with the outlets speaking to various individuals who disclosed the reasons for the rapper and model breaking up, as well as how causal the whole scenario was in the first place.

Shayk and West, who live on different ends of the nation (Kanye West in Los Angeles and Shayk in New York), were apparently always keeping things casual. "They've always just been having a good time together," reports said.

Now, they're both off on their own and they were, in fact, looking for a good time with no strings attached. According to a source, the breakup was caused by Shayk and West realising they weren't exactly good romantic partners but to be fair they hadn't gotten serious in the first place.

Elliot Page and Emma Portner

After nearly three years of marriage, the couple, who met on social media in 2017, decided to officially call it quits.

After three years of marriage, Canadian actor, Elliot Page, has divorced his wife, Emma Portner. On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, Page and her partner, who came out as transgender in December 2020, issued a joint statement. "We have made the tough choice to divorce following our separation last summer, after much deliberation and careful consideration," it stated. “We hold each other in the highest regard and are still great friends."

John Mulaney and Anna Marie Tendler

In July, John Mulaney filed for divorce from Anna Marie Tendler, who he was married to for almost seven year. John's rep confirmed the divorce to Page Six exclusively in a statement. "As he continues to focus on his health and going back to work," his representative stated in a statement, referring to John's latest rehab stay. In a second statement to People, Anna Marie added, "I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. As he continues his rehabilitation, I wish him strength and prosperity."

John is currently dating Olivia Munn, with whom he is expecting his first child.

Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck

Ben and Ana ended their romance in late January, just over a year after they first made their love public, giving us Dunkin' runs, motorcycle excursions, and engagement and cohabitation rumours throughout the period. The breakup was "mutual and entirely amicable," according to insiders who talked to People at the time. They chose to break up together after having countless chats about their future. The couple apparently broke up over the phone adding to the list of devastating celebrity breakups. They said that while Affleck and de Armas are at different stages in their lives, there is "deep love and respect" between them.
